Transforming Artificial Intelligence (AI) into a Highly Effective and Responsible Learning Partner

In the rapidly evolving digital age, equipping youth with AI Literacy is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity. Lim Sokchentra, a bright Grade 11 student at Raksmey Sophorn High School, stands as a powerful testament to how targeted education can transform a student’s mindset from apprehension to empowerment. Following his participation in the AI Literacy Training, implemented by KAPE with cooperation with Department of Digital Transformation (DDT), led by ASEAN Foundation and funded by Google.org, Sokchentra has successfully integrated Artificial Intelligence into his academic life and daily routine, not just as a user, but as a responsible digital citizen.

Prior to the training, Sokchentra viewed AI merely as a shortcut for solving minor problems. Like many of his peers, he harboured a quiet fear that technology might eventually replace human labour and diminish future job prospects. However, the training provided a pivotal shift in perspective.

By learning the fundamentals, the vision behind AI development, and the crucial code of ethics, Sokchentra realized that "AI cannot completely replace the human element." This insight replaced his fear with confidence. He learned to view AI not as a competitor, but as a powerful tool requiring human oversight ("human-in-the-loop"), allowing his to navigate the digital landscape with an awareness of potential risks and safety measures.

Sokchentra has moved beyond passive consumption of technology. He now leverages AI with creativity and critical thinking:

  1. A Personalized Learning Assistant: Instead of asking for simple answers, he uses AI to generate practice exercises and supplementary assignments, effectively customizing his own learning curriculum to strengthen his weak points.
  2. Catalyst for Innovation: He uses AI-generated drafts as a baseline, applying his own critical thinking to refine, edit, and improve the content. This ensures the final output is unique and infused with human creativity.
  3. Champion of Digital Ethics: Sok Chentra strictly adheres to ethical guidelines. He respects intellectual property, refuses to use others' images or names without permission, and takes full accountability for the content he produces.

Sokchentra’s journey does not end with self-improvement. He is committed to bridging the digital divide by becoming a peer educator. He plans to share his knowledge with friends and his community, teaching them how to utilize AI tools available on mobile phones and computers to maximize their productivity while staying safe online.

"We shouldn't fear AI replacing us; instead, we must use it as a mirror to reflect and expand our own creativity. AI doesn't diminish our potential—it amplifies it," said Lim Sokchentra.

He continues that "Mastering AI isn't just about commanding a machine; it is about taking responsibility. We must remember that we are the ones who define and control technology, not the other way around. Before deploying any data from AI, we must think critically and ethically ensuring we never infringe on privacy or use technology to mask our own mistakes. True intelligence lies in using these tools to serve the common good and to drive genuine self-development."
