Success Story: A New Path in Education and Stepping Towards a Dream for Youth Horn Senghorng
Date : 2026-04-30

Youth Horn Senghorng, currently 15 years old, is an exceptionally vibrant and outstanding Grade 10 student at the New Generation School (NGS) within Preah Ang Duong High School, located in Prey Veng City, Prey Veng Province. This young girl was born into a middle-class family with three siblings, consisting of an older sister, a younger brother, and herself. Senghorng's father is a dedicated veterinary officer who is always busy treating and saving livestock in the community, while her mother is a hardworking local merchant. Her family resides warmly in Pou Rieng Tboung village, Pou Rieng commune, Pou Rieng district, Prey Veng province. Despite the parents' demanding schedules to make a living, they have unfailingly prioritized their children's education above all else.
Looking back at a challenging past, before the New Generation School (NGS) initiative implemented by the Kampuchea Action to Promote Education (KAPE) had reached her community, Senghorng's educational journey felt like walking in the dark without a guiding compass. The most critical and burdensome issue at that time was the severe financial pressure on her family caused by the immense costs of private tutoring (extra classes). To keep pace with the curriculum and maintain good grades, she was compelled to take extra classes for almost every subject, which exponentially increased her parents' financial burden. Even more regrettably, the learning environment back then relied entirely on passive rote memorization and copying notes from the blackboard, severely lacking practical application. This passive learning methodology left Senghorng in a state of deep uncertainty; she was completely unable to uncover her hidden potential, unaware of her true strengths, and possessed no platform to genuinely express her capabilities. She was merely a student learning to pass exams, not learning to understand life or prepare for the future.
The life of this young woman entered a transformative new chapter, bathed in true light, from the moment she discovered and successfully enrolled as a fully-fledged student in the New Generation School initiative at Preah Ang Duong High School. The arrival of the NGS initiative did not merely change the physical appearance of the school; it revolutionized the entire mindset and pedagogical system. The most profound positive impact provided by the project was the fundamental shift from passive learning to Active Learning and Constructivism. In this new paradigm, students are no longer mere receivers of information but active builders of their own knowledge. Senghorng fully benefited from state-of-the-art educational resources, including standardized science laboratories, computer labs, 21st-century libraries, and the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for research. Her learning was no longer confined to textbooks but expanded through hands-on practice (Learning by Doing), dynamic teamwork, problem-solving discussions, and active participation in various subject-based study clubs.
This deep-rooted intervention from the project profoundly impacted Senghorng's psychological state and academic spirit. Upon receiving such comprehensive support, she felt an overwhelming sense of excitement, and her motivation to study was doubly ignited. From a shy girl who previously hesitated to express her opinions, she transformed into a courageous, highly self-confident youth capable of public speaking and utilizing critical thinking to analyze and resolve complex problems. Beyond individual capacity building, the NGS project provided the most effective solution to her family's economic struggles. Through the full-day learning system, guided by highly attentive and specialized educators, she no longer needed to spend extra time or money on private tutoring. This structural change drastically alleviated the financial burden on her family, allowing her parents to save their hard-earned money for other essential family needs. As a direct result of this superior educational system, Senghorng achieved phenomenal grades in her lower secondary school diploma exam and secured numerous medals of honor from various academic competitions, most notably emerging as the champion in the school's prestigious reading competition.
Overwhelmed with emotion and pride over her life's transformation, youth Horn Senghorng profoundly shared her thoughts that, "If we are currently facing difficulties or if any obstacles are blocking our path, do not be too quick to surrender or abandon hope, because every problem always has a solution, much like a closed door always has a key waiting to unlock it. Today, if we are utterly exhausted, we can afford to take a brief rest, but tomorrow we must stand back up and continue our journey with a spirit stronger than before. No success falls from the sky or is achieved easily without sweat, tears, and relentless struggle. Through my personal transformation and success today, I wish to express my deepest and most sincere gratitude to KAPE, the New Generation School, and all the generous donors who have tirelessly sacrificed their resources to uplift and alter the destinies of students like myself. You have granted us a far superior, high-quality education and clearly paved a radiant path toward the dreams I so deeply desire."
Adding to her message of resilience, Senghorng strongly emphasized the immense value of time and continuous effort: "If we believe we are incapable and that things are too difficult, and we choose to give up, we must remember that the precious time we are letting slip away in despair is the exact same time that others are fiercely dedicating to absorbing knowledge. Therefore, in the moments when others are walking, those are the exact moments we must sprint at our fastest pace to catch up with our goals and seize what we desire. The resulting fruits of this desperate sprint will undeniably bring genuine improvement and dignity to our lives."
Looking toward the distant future, Senghorng nurtures a fiercely held dream: to become a highly just and righteous "Judge." This aspiration is not born of coincidence but stems from a deeply ingrained love for justice that has fascinated her since childhood, harboring a steadfast belief that, regardless of circumstances, good will inevitably conquer evil. In taking firm steps toward this monumental and highly responsible dream, KAPE's educational framework, via the New Generation School, has consistently acted as a crucial compass and the strongest foundation. By encouraging students to engage in research, social awareness, volunteerism, and the critical analysis of current social realities, the school has provided her with the essential capital required to pursue a career in the legal field. She candidly acknowledges that without the unwavering presence and holistic support of the NGS initiative, the road to her future would undoubtedly be met with pitch-black darkness, and she would likely lack the capacity, knowledge, and courage to stand up and fight for her dreams as she confidently does today.
As a parting message of sharing and a wake-up call to motivate all younger generations, Senghorng always remembers and reminds others that every life journey will inevitably face hurdles, and the path of education is no different. However, every single problem possesses a solution, as everything that occurs has an underlying cause. She urgently motivates all youths never to become fragile or abandon their education halfway, no matter how severe the circumstances they face. She believes that only true knowledge and high-quality education can forge the sharpest weapon and the most powerful vehicle capable of altering our collective destinies toward a brilliantly successful future. As a deeply meaningful Cambodian proverb that she forever holds close to her heart dictates: "A boat relies on its oars, while education relies on perseverance." This proverb constantly reminds her that patience and moving forward step by step without yielding—like drops of water steadily filling a bamboo tube—guarantees that a monumental and glorious success will undoubtedly be waiting to welcome us at our ultimate destination.
