From a Rural Girl to a Professional Accountant: The Impact of the CTSP Scholarship on Long Sovandany’s Life
For many young women living in rural areas, accessing higher education is a significant dream, but for Long Sovandany, this dream has transformed into a brilliant reality that has completely reshaped her life. Originally from Kampong Siem District, Kampong Cham Province, Sovandany came from a humble background. Today, at the age of 23, she has successfully graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Banking from Western University and is currently serving as an active accountant at the Tboung Khmum Post Office. This success was not a coincidence; rather, it is the fruit of her own perseverance combined with the unwavering support of the Cambodian Tertiary Scholarship Program (CTSP), implemented by KAPE (Kampuchea Action to Promote Education) with funding from The Asia Foundation.
The CTSP project provided Sovandany with more than just the opportunity to acquire technical knowledge at the university level; it also trained her to become a capable leader. Through the program, she actively participated in study groups, receiving training on how to lead financial study teams, which allowed her to enjoy researching and solving practical exercises with her peers. Furthermore, she volunteered with KAPE to lead high school students in participating in Commune Council meetings in Vihear Luong Commune, Suong City. This social engagement became a pivotal turning point, helping her overcome her own fears and shyness. Previously a quiet girl who hesitated to express her opinions, Sovandany now possesses a strong self-confidence that allows her to stand and speak clearly in front of over 30 students and school principals with poise. Moreover, she has brought forth creative ideas to help contribute to the development of her community.
The positive impact Sovandany received from CTSP extends beyond herself; it has also cast a light of hope upon her family. As an elder sister with a stable job and income, she has become a strong pillar of support for her siblings. She constantly encourages her brothers and sisters to study hard and uses her own earnings to sponsor their extra classes in computer skills and English during their free time, ensuring they are well-equipped for the future.
In an interview expressing her deep gratitude, Sovandany shared that "The CTSP project was the driving force that rescued and directed my life. Through leading high school students in social activities and participating in study groups, I learned many soft skills that regular classrooms did not teach, especially the courage to speak in public and problem-solving skills. Without this scholarship, I would not have had the chance to stand where I am today, as an accountant capable of supporting myself and helping my siblings get an education."
In summary, the life of Long Sovandany stands as tangible proof that providing educational opportunities and leadership training to underprivileged youth can create valuable human resources for society. Today, she is filled with joy and immense pride in her progress, often sharing a short sentiment: "I am incredibly proud that my life has been transformed from darkness into a light of hope and true prosperity."
